Kansas City Power and Light Company Orders Cannon
Technologies Esubstation.com Substation Monitoring and Information
System
March 20, 2001, Minneapolis, MN - Cannon
Technologies, Inc. of Wayzata, Minn. announced today that
it has been awarded a key project for its Internet based
intelligent substation monitoring system, Esubstation.com,
from Kansas City Power and Light Company, Kansas City, Mo.
The Esubstation™ system will be applied initially
to KCPL's Pflumm substation in Kansas City. Expansion to
neighboring substations will be facilitated by the initial
infrastructure included in the project. Cannon looks forward
to this opportunity to partner with KCPL in further developing
this exciting technology.
Internet based communication enables Esubstation.com
to provide inexpensive enterprise access to information
available at the substation, without jeopardizing the security
of the EMS/Scada system. Esubstation.com uses Cannon Technologies'
Substation Advisor® applications for predictive
maintenance to enable better planning and avoid costly downtime.
While not its primary purpose, the Esubstation™ architecture
also provides a ``back door'' to system operating information
in the event of an EMS outage, since the communication link
is redundant.
Esubstation™ includes Cannon Technologies'
Substation Advisor® sensors. Integrating with
substation IEDs, the sensors monitor power transformers,
circuit breakers, and transmission and distribution feeders.
Parameters such as transformer temperature, cooling status,
load tap changer operations, feeder load, reactive power
flow, breaker trip time, and insulating gas density are
monitored for magnitude and duration by an Internet connected
remote server, with alarm information emailed to appropriate
utility personnel. Access to a private Esubstation™
website provides realtime information for verification of
alarm conditions, as well as historical trends, fault information,
and access to limit settings.
Esubstation™ is a module of Cannon's Yukon
distribution automation software platform, which also includes
modules for direct load management, load curtailment, load
aggregation, genset control, and centralized capacitor control.
Yukon™ functionality is offered as both a service running
on Cannon servers, or as a licensed installation in the
utility data center.
