Cannon Technologies' Load Management Systems
Help Utilities Survive Record Temperatures
June 30, 1998, Minneapolis, Minn....Record
temperatures last Thursday and Friday, June 25-26, drove electricity
demand to new levels across the United States, and pushed the
price of spot-market power to an unprecedented high. At one point
on Thursday, spot-market power in the Southeast reached $4900
per megawatt-hour, more than 120 times last summers' average in
many areas of $38 per megawatt-hour.
Cannon Technologies' president and founder, Ed Cannon,
commented on the situation. "We estimate that customers using
our DSM/2 Load Management system collectively were able shed more
than 1,500 megawatts of electricity last week," said Cannon.
"That's the equivalent of 3 large, coal-fired generation
units. In addition, many utilities combined capacitor bank control
with load management to maintain voltage and extend the life of
overloaded substations."
Using Cannon Technologies' DSM/2 Load Management
software and hardware, Cannon Technologies customers across the
country were able to shave their peaks during the heat wave by
controlling customer irrigation, water heater, and air conditioner
units as well as interruptible commercial loads. Load management
is the process whereby utilities directly control customer appliances
in order to reduce peak demand for electricity.
Cannon Technologies, Inc. is a privately held company
