Cannon Technologies chosen by CP&L to provide
first commercial paging Capacitor Bank Controllers
July 15, 1998, Minneapolis, Minn.-Cannon
Technologies, Inc. of Wayzata, Minn. announced today that they
have been chosen by Carolina Power & Light (CP&L) of Raleigh,
N.C. to deliver 1,400 commercial paging Capacitor Bank Controllers
(CBC). This new technology will allow CP&L to remotely control
capacitor banks using commercial paging technology as the primary
communications medium.
Cannon Technologies' president and founder, Ed Cannon,
had this to say about receiving the order: "This is another
example of how Cannon Technologies is offering innovative products
for electric utility automation," said Cannon. "We're
thrilled to be chosen by CP&L, whose reputation for innovation
and customer service is well known."
Capacitor bank control has existed for many years
using a variety of communications mediums (VHF radio, powerline
carrier, FM/SCA) to send and receive the messages, however this
is one of the first and largest orders in the electric utility
industry for commercial paging CBC's.
CP&L provides electricity and energy services
to more than 1.1 million customers in a 30,000-square-mile service
area including much of central and southeastern North Carolina,
the Asheville, N.C. area and northeastern South Carolina.
Cannon Technologies is a privately held company
founded in 1987 specializing in the development of software and
systems for electric utility remote metering, substation automation
and load management. In addition to capacitor bank controllers,
Cannon Technologies also manufactures 1-way and 2-way automatic
meter reading (AMR) and load management systems, and has the most
widely used master station software in the industry, DSM/2.
Cannon Technologies has also developed the Substation
Advisor®, an automation system for substations
that includes equipment sensors, trending applications for
predictive maintenance, and interfaces to many existing
SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) systems.
Cannon Technologies presently has over 240 electric utilities
worldwide using its products. Based in Wayzata, Minn., Cannon
Technologies also has branch offices in Iowa, Nebraska,
North Dakota and Texas.
