Cannon Technologies Unveils Simple, Fast Technology
For Managing Electric Utility Loads
August 24, 1999, Minneapolis, MN....Cannon
Technologies, Inc. of Wayzata, MN announced today that it will
begin shipment later this year of its LCR 5000, the utility industry's
first load control receiver to use Motorola's 900 MHz FLEX®
paging technology. The LCR 5000 enables utilities to use a national
paging network to control air conditioners, water heaters, distributed
generation, irrigation pumps, oil wells, and other customer loads.
Controlling these loads allows utilities to manage the cost and
availability of energy during peak conditions and add revenue
by maximizing energy sales on a daily basis.
Cannon Technologies President Ed Cannon commented:
"This summer, utilities found out that some were better prepared
for peaks than others. At an installed cost of less than $150/Kilowatt,
the LCR 5000 makes paging load control the most cost effective
and quickest solution for utilities who have short term capacity
problems and are looking to generate additional revenue,"
said Cannon. "Our solutions are all focused on helping utilities
run better and generate revenue through load control."
Cannon Technologies has already successfully implemented
900 MHz FLEX paging for capacitor bank control, with more than
2,000 units installed nationwide. 900 MHz FLEX paging service
is widespread, reliable and it allows utilities and energy service
providers to control loads anywhere in the country - not just
in their own service area. The only components required to get
a system up and running are Cannon Technologies' software, LCR
5000s, and a contract with a paging provider.
With the LCR 5000 a single paging message is able
to address a large group of receivers or a single unit. The LCR
can control up to three individual appliances and employs the
proven intelligent cycling, multiple addressing and weatherproof
construction of Cannon's other load control receivers. During
peak summer conditions, this technology will allow utilities to
shed loads and control distributed generation anywhere just by
sending a page. "The beauty of 900 MHz FLEX paging is that
it can be used cost effectively to control 10 or 100,000 switches
and the signal propagates much better than traditional VHF or
lower frequency paging technologies." said Cannon. "Many
of our customers who controlled this summer were able to help
out others by selling power back into the grid."
Load control systems are used by electric utilities
to minimize generation needs and maximize energy sales. This past
summer, customers using Cannon Technologies load control system
shed an estimated 5 Gigawatts of demand, which is the equivalent
output of 10 large fossil fuel plants.
Cannon Technologies, Inc. is a privately held company
founded in 1987 specializing in the development of software and
hardware systems for electric utility automation including capacitor
control, voltage control, remote metering, substation information
systems and load management. Cannon Technologies, Inc. manufactures
automatic meter reading (AMR) and load management systems, and
has the most widely used load management software in the industry,
DSM/2. Cannon Technologies presently has over 240 electric utility
customers worldwide. The company is based in Wayzata, Minn., with
