Cannon Technologies Unveils Load Management Supervisor Software to Interface with GE/Harris XA/21

September 23, 1998, Minneapolis, Minn.-Cannon Technologies, Inc. of Wayzata, Minn. announced today that it has recently completed and shipped the first version of its new Load Management Supervisor (LMS) software to run on GE Harris Energy Control Systems' (GE Harris) XA/21 EMS. The new software module enables the dispatcher to operate his DSM/2 Load Management software from the EMS console. Using load forecasts and 17 different regression functions, the LMS program allows the operator to build, study, and execute load management strategies to achieve the desired peak reduction.

The first two customers to receive this software are Minnkota Power Cooperative in Grand Forks, North Dakota and Wolverine Power Cooperative in Cadillac, Michigan.

"The new Cannon Technologies LMS and GEHarris XA/21 software will provide an integrated, automated way for our control center operators or marketers to schedule varying amounts of future hour load control," said Minnkota Power Load Management and Metering Manager Roger Simundson. "This in turn will allow our operators to more easily and economically match Minnkota system future hour load requirements with future hour generation or energy purchases/sales," said Simundson.

Among the LMS' other key features are its ability to calculate real-time load that can be shed, and feed it into the EMS Reserve Monitor Program, where it is counted as reserve or standby generation. In addition, the data can also be fed to GE Harris' Unit Commitment/Transaction Evaluation (UC/TE) in order to allow the EMS to more efficiently determine how and when to use existing generation capacity.

"Being able to interface with the EMS system represents a significant leap in load management software technology," said Cannon Technologies' LMS co-developer Ben Wallace. "This software gives utilities the ability to use load forecasting data to calculate the amount of load to shed, it interfaces that data with the GE Harris XA/21 EMS Power Network Applications (PNA) and it controls load management and distribution capacitor banks. This takes the concept of load management to a whole new level," said Wallace.

Cannon Technologies is a privately held company founded in 1987 specializing in the development of software and systems for electric utility remote metering, substation automation and load management. Cannon Technologies also manufactures 1-way and 2-way automatic meter reading (AMR) and load management systems, and has the most widely used load management master station software in the industry, DSM/2.

Cannon Technologies has also developed the Substation Advisor®, an automation system for substations that includes equipment sensors, trending applications for predictive maintenance, and interfaces to many existing SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) systems. The Substation Advisor® was the subject of a front-page story in the July issue of the quarterly GE Harris quarterly publication, Synergy News, highlighting a recent installation at Minnesota Power and the Advisor's ability to interface with the GE Harris D20 RTU. Cannon Technologies presently has over 240 electric utilities worldwide using its products. Based in Wayzata, Minn., Cannon Technologies also has branch offices in Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota and Texas.

GE Harris Energy Control Systems, LLC, a joint venture of GE Power Systems and the Electronic Systems Sector of Harris Corporation, is a leading provider of innovative, real-time, information technology solutions that meet the evolving needs of the electric utility industry for automation, control and monitoring of critical operations.
