Centralized Capacitor Control
Utilities
have long understood the value of applying capacitors for
voltage support and VAR management to reduce losses and
release system capacity. The challenge has been cost-effective
control of capacitor banks to match daily and seasonal requirements.
Control has traditionally taken place at the bank using
time, temperature, VAR, or voltage controllers. These tended
to be inefficient and unreliable, providing no indication
of proper operation. Intelligent, programmable devices evolved,
but tended to be expensive, while still not optimizing power
factor on a system-wide basis, and requiring highly technical
on-site maintenance for every adjustment.
Virtual Verification with VAR Feedback
Our approach combines an inexpensive controller
with centralized intelligence based on Power Factor feedback.
The result is optimum power factor for all feeders, during
all load conditions, with the lowest over-all system cost.
Modern
communication technologies are the key ingredient. One-way
communication uses feeder VAR monitoring to confirm operation
for each bank. Two-way communication is used where
downline voltage and neutral current levels are important.
Our CBC series controllers even work nicely without remote
communications, providing local control based on configurable
Over-voltage/Under-voltage override thresholds.
Any Load or Weather Conditions
Centralized capacitor control allows more
sophisticated and flexible control strategies to be implemented
at the Yukon® Master Station without visiting every controlled
capacitor bank, and alerts operations of failed banks via
email. The browser-based viewer allows planners and engineers
to monitor system performance without interrupting the operations
group. Our customers tell us that intelligent, centralized
capacitor control improves the bottom line with a rapid
ROI.
